Europe Travel in November

Tuesday December 2, 2003
You might think that travel to Europe in late autumn would be something you'd try to avoid, but even November has some advantages, especially for the photographer. In the Lunigiana region of Italy, I found soft fingers of fog wrapping themselves around and over craggy peaks; soft, slanting autumn light that filtered into the valleys, and great clouds and sky. Here's a peek at what the Minolta 7i saw: The Lunigiana in Autumn Picture Gallery.

Sure, you'll probably have some rain to contend with. Why not wait those storms out by renting a cosy house with a fireplace? You'll get a much more intimate look at European life in Autumn when the tourists have gone and the folks go back to what they do to live.

If you still need to do something touristy, many city planners have thought of comfort when the days get short and wet. Bologna has miles of arcaded streets. They say you can walk a long way through Bologna before going out in the rain. After three weeks in Italy and France in late November, I'm hooked on way off season travel. But then again, maybe it's just me.
