Ancient Figurines Found in Germany
Thursday December 18, 2003
National Geographic has good coverage of some of the world's oldest art found recently in Hohle Fels Cave in Germany's Ach Valley. The 30,000 year-old figurines were intricately carved and engraved, which astonishes some people--perhaps because we tend to extrapolate back down the exaggerated timeline of our own cultural achievements to arrive at the conclusion that ancient man couldn't have done much technologically beyond clubbing his potential spouse on the noggin with a log.
In any case, according to this page, you can take a Labor Day (May 1st) 10k hike in the valley to caves like Hohler Fels, sponsored by the city of Blaubeuren
