What's Under Rome for the Tourist? Lots
Thursday January 29, 2004
Sure, you can spend weeks just seeing the stuff on Rome's surface, but why not seek out the spectacular, hidden side of the Eternal City on your European Vacation? Going underground has become easier than ever. A recent email from Giulia Pietroletti alerted us to the new tours by Rome Sotterranea, a group that is mostly involved in archaeological research, but has gotten special permission by the Superintendent of Archaeology to offer tours to many of the underground sites normally closed to visitors, "We also arrange tours inside the ancient aqueducts pipes and in very unusual sites as the Emissary of Nemi Lake or the secret passages beneath Villa Adriana." Check out our recently updated Underground Rome article for more on the top underground places to visit in Rome.
