Europe's Best Walled Cities to Visit

Ah, the romantic vista of a medieval walled city viewed from afar! How is it that smoldering old ruins and a city's pock-marked defensive walls jiggle our heart strings so? I don't have an answer to this eternal travel question, but I do like to visit medieval walled cities enough to tell you about the best of them. (Lord Byron might have an answer, come to think of it; the romantic poet has extolled the virtues of many of these cities.)
