Travel France's Volcanic Heartland

Thursday April 14, 2005
A stop along France's famous A75 autoroute, Saint-Flour is a medieval village built atop the Auvergne region's highest volcano. Lots to see and do along the A75 passing by Saint-Flour, including a Volcano theme park, the world's longest and highest viaduct, great mountain vistas and a sturdy mountain cuisine that might change your way of thinking about French food. See Saint-Flour: Travel and Tourism Information for the Auvergne Village in France. We have a virtual tour of Saint-Flour as well.

The recently completed Millau Viaduct--the world's longest and highest--allows cars to bypass the town where farmer and anti-globalization activist Jose Bove and the "Millau 10" tore up a McDonalds after the United States imposed tariffs on Roquefort cheese in response to the European Union's banning of hormone-treated beef. This year the Tour de France will pass under the Millau viaduct on the Albi to Mende stage on Thursday, July 21. See a France Travel Map, or search for a Tour de France tour.
