Meet the New Bavarian Pope
Wednesday April 20, 2005
Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI, was born in the village of Marktl am Inn in Bavaria, but as a teenager studied at St. Michael's Seminary in Traunstein, located in the extreme southeast corner of Germany between Munich and Salzburg along the A8 Autobahn. He returned to Traunstein after the war. [Traunstein and Marktl am Inn location map and travel information]
The new Pope enjoys eating Bavarian cuisine at a restaurant near the Vatican and he's a walker. He speaks Italian, German, French, English, Spanish and Latin. He, like his predecessor, is sure to travel; he has already confirmed that he will attend World Youth Day in Cologne in August.
