Bags that Weigh Themselves

By , About.com GuideMay 4, 2006

Follow me on:

Let's talk about the "innovative" Ricardo of Beverly Hills suitcases that come with a built in digital scale so you can see the results of trying to stuff the entire contents of your closet in the bag for a weekend trip to the marble mines above Massa.

Airlines are clamping down on excess baggage weight, and really enjoy collecting some extra sheckels for your wanton clothing excess, so the idea sounds like it would work to keep you away from such charges. And the bags themselves offer a ton of nice features, like removable inserts that can be made into a day pack or function as a toiletry kit. And they have big wheels.

The problem is, all this stuff weighs a lot. In fact the larger of the two bags weighs more than the packed bags I take for a two month summer trip--14 pounds. Still, if you're not interested in packing light and don't want to pay the airlines more than the ticket price, check prices and specs on Luggage with Built In Scales from Ricardo of Beverly Hills.

Why not just use the bathroom scales?

Bathroom scales! How absolutely low tech! Besides, how acurate is your bathroom scale? And would you really want to set your baggage on it?

For me, I’m not going to hit the common 50 pound limit if I added a 20 pound sledge to my luggage. But I’ve seen and been amazed by what other people bring to Europe for a one week summer vacation. I’d really like to look inside one of these bags and see what’s in there.
