Caserta Royal Palace Pictures
The Royal Palace at Caserta was fashioned after Versailles and rivals it in opulence and wretched excess. You've seen bits of it in popular movies. The palace is divided into a tad over 1200 rooms and took 28 years to build, interupted by some nagging problems for its well-healed inhabitants like famine and the ensuing epidemics, but was finally completed in 1780 to become one of Italy's most visited monuments.
Caserta is a 35 minute train ride from Naples. The Royal Palace is a five minute walk from the station.
