The French Pyrenees and the Ariege

The tour de France made its last stop in the Pyrenees today, ending with a photo finish sprint to the finish line in the town of Foix. Folks in Medieval garb welcomed them from the top of Foix castle.

Foix is located in the rough but stunningly beautiful Ariege department of the Midi-Pyrénées region in southern France. Did you know that there are abundant prehistoric caves in the Ariege? It's a great place to take the kids. They'll have a great time being a bit cro magnonish over at the Prehistoric Park. Then there's the soothing blackness of the interior of La Grotte de Niaux, an important prehistoric painted cave. Read all about it: Tarascon, the French Pyrenees, and the paths to Prehistory.
