Before you take a wine trip in Portugal, you might want to pick up a copy of Charles Metcalfe & Cathy McWhirter's Wine and Food Lover's Guide to Portugal (compare prices). A review copy is sitting here on my desk begging to be used. It's a beautiful book, and if you wanted to know anything about those Portuguese wine routes in detail, including dining and lodging recommendations, this wouldn't be a bad guide to lead an independent traveler through the process of planning what I'm going to call a "winecation".
