Trendy Hostel? One Opened in Rotterdam

Tuesday June 16, 2009

So how far can you go and still call your place a hostel? Piet Blom built some trendy houses on pylons in 1984 called Cube Houses. Now designers are turning them into a Stayokay "Hostel":

The houses are located close to the Oude Haven, a historic area of the city bristling with bars, restaurants and cafés. The hostel will be decorated simply and stylishly according to a design created by the Edward van Vliet/SEVV design agency. Every room will have its own washing facilities and the hostel will be fitted with state-of-the-art facilities.

Doesn't "bristling" make you itch? In any case, this sounds like a pretty sweet hostel. And the price is hostel-like, at around €20 per person.

But I'm wondering if this kinda "designer hostel" upgrading won't fizzle out soon. It's like our 1974 Honda CRX, a wonderful little sportscar that could outrun anything on a road with enough curves in it and still get 50 mpg. Then they made it bigger and more powerful and more trendy and more expensive and heavier and...then they had to stop making it because it had become like every other fat, bloated car lumbering along on the highway.

So, get a room in Rotterdam while the price is right and it's still trendy: Stayokay Rotterdam Kubuswoningen

It does seem to be the big trend at the moment, if they can keep the prices down then I hope that it’s a trend that continues.

The state of hostels now compared to 5 years ago is so much better.
