Uncovering Bern's Gallows

Sunday September 27, 2009

Gallows were used up until the early in the 19th century in Bern, Switzerland to keep folks in line with the powers that be. Often, those executed were buried face down and nearby. So bad were the memories that folks really didn't want to live anywhere near them.

Until now. There's nothing like the lure of brand new luxury lodging with a view to wipe out those grim thoughts of the bad old days of yore--so builders are waiting anxiously while archaeologists discover the details of public hangings.

Swiss Tourism pointed us fearlessly to an interesting video of the excavations. Sweet dreams.
