The Benedictine Abbey of Reichenau Island on Lake Constance was founded in 724. By the 10th century it became one of the leading centers for the production of illuminated manuscripts in Europe. The island is well-equipped with small and free museums ideal for relating its monastic history--and is small enough for a day trip. I enjoyed my visit very much, and have prepared a short virtual tour: Pictures of Reichenau Island on Lake Constance in Germany.
