Today marks the start of Floriade, the Netherlands flower festival held every ten years, this year in Venlo. Floriade is most associated with the iconic Dutch Tulip and you may think the mania for them started in the Netherlands, but wait...the tulip "first appeared in western Europe through Antwerp's port 450 years ago, a good 30 years before it made its entrance in the Netherlands," according to Flander's Today.

You see, 1012 has been designated "the year of the tulip" and the World Tulip Summit is coming to Antwerp, Belgium in September, and the folks from Antwerp are starting to seek recognition for their part in the rise of the Tulip in Europe.
