Agrigento, Sicily - Temples (5 pictures)
Back in the mid-80's you could take a room at the Villa Athena Hotel for around $50 and have a view of the Greek temples from any window in the place--including a little porthole over the toilet! The Hotel costs considerably more now, but the temples are still lit up at night and you can dine under the stars and look up at them. It's quite the romantic spot.

Alba Fucens - A Roman outpost in the Abruzzo (5 pictures)
Archaeological Excavation: Alba Fucens was colonized in 303 b.c. as a sort of halfway city between Rome and the coast. Spectacularly situated near a lake drained in antiquity after seveal tries because of frequent flooding, the site can easily be visited because it's just off the Rome-Pescara Autostrada. The pictures are part of our feature on The Abruzzo.

Aosta (9 Pictures)
Aosta is a beautiful town in a fabulous setting--a great place to visit for archaeological buffs as well as ski fanatics. See our Aosta profile for info on visiting.

Assisi (4 pictures)
The approach to Assisi from the train station offers spectacular views as the town of Assisi appears out of the Umbrian plain.

Assisi -The Rocca and Churches (4 pictures)
The views of Assisi are good from just about anywhere. And when the wildflowers are in bloom, they're even better. The last two pictures in the series are of the Basilica of San Francesco and the Cattedrale di San Rufino.

Burano (8 pictures)
40 minutes by ferry from Venice, this island of lace makers features colorful houses and street scenes. The pictures are part of our Burano Travel Information article.

Cefalù Sicily (2 pictures)
Cefalu is a medieval town built on the site of an ancient Sicanian and Greek settlement just east of Palermo and easily accessable by train or bus as well as car. Now a resort town, good food and attractions abound. More information is available in our Cefalu links.

Cinque Terre (4 Pictures)
Walking the path between the "5 lands" of the Cinque Terre is a joy. You can find lodging in the town of Monterossa al Mare.

Civita di Bagnoregio (2 Pictures)
Civita di Bagnoregio is a small Italian hill town in the Italian region of Lazio. It's population had declined to about 15 before it was "discovered" by Rick Steves. Civita now has some tourist facilities and people are moving back into town. The pictures show the town as it rises out of the valley. If you wish more information on Civita, or wish to stay in or near there, see our Civita di Bagnoregio links.

Ferrara (8 Pictures)
This Emilia-Romagna town between Bologna and Venice has a distinctive architecture and a castle you don't have to climb a hill to visit. For visitor information see our Ferrara Italy Quick Guide.

Florence - Views from the Arno (5 pictures)
Everybody's favorite city in Italy--but clogged with tourists June-August. Go in the off season if you want to hear Italian spoken.

Lake Trasimeno - Fishing Nets (2 pictures)
From the land where Hannibal ambushed two of Rome's legions in 217 BC. You can visit the castle ruins at Castiglione del Lago, or take a boat out to Isola Maggiore, an island of lacemakers and legendary St. Francis encounters with grateful fish. If you fancy eating impeccable fresh fish--unlike the venerable Saint--don't miss the Sagra de Pesce in late June.

Lucca - Rooftops and Gardens (8 pictures)
Lucca is a wonderful Tuscan walled city. You can walk the Renaissance Walls, a circular trek of about 4 km in length, for views all around, or you can ascend the Guinigi Tower, one of the few remaining towers, to catch views of the rooftops below. There are also formal gardens and a botanical garden to visit. Lucca is renouned for its olive oil. For more information on visiting Lucca, see Lucca Italy Links.
