This map is intended to be used for travel planning and to get an idea of the extent of Spain's rail network. It shows the major Spanish cities and rail lines. The lines in purple show high-speed train routes. The brown lines are only suitable for slower trains. (Be aware that lines may be upgraded since this document was written.)

In Spain the highest speed trains are called AVE - Alta Velocidad Español. The line that runs from Madrid to Sevilla takes 2.5 hours to complete.
The Euromed is a high speed train that operates between Barcelona, Valencia and Alacante.
A reservation is necessary to travel on any train other than Regional Exprés or Cercanías (suburban train).
For more detailed information on Spain's rail system, see the RENFE site. It's often slow, but you can get timetables and prices and find ticket offices and stations.
A variety of different Spain rail passes are available, including the two-country France'n Spain Pass and Spain 'n Portugal Rail Pass. The Spain FlexiPass offers any 3 days unlimited train travel in a 2 month period.
