Vernante
was the last home of master illustrator Attilio Mussino, who illustrated
Carlo Collodi's Pinocchio. Two Vernante townspeople have reproduced
those illustrations on many walls as murals, making Vernante an interesting
day trip in
Piemonte.

of the city and other attractions, see Pinocchio's
Artistry in Vernante.

In The Vicinity of Vernante:
- Cuneo is
a fine city with different architecture than in other places in Italy.
It has a fine, renaissance style arcaded main street. The
province of Cuneo is famous for its big red wines: barbera, barbaresco,
dolcetto, nebbiolo, langhe, and pelaverga.
- Ventimiglia, 20 miles from the French border (hence the name) is a pleasant
resort town.
- Limone Piemonte is mostly a winter sports area in the
Maritime Alps.
- Italy's
Maritime Alps, the Alpi Marittime, are also know as the "piccole
Dolomite." It's a relatively unknown area seldom touristed but
incredibly scenic. David Leibowitz has some pages about Rambling
in the Maritime Alps, and you might want to visit Maritime
Alps Nature Park, the largest park in Piemonte.
