castle and gardens, north of Copenhagen.

Frederiksborg Castle (Frederiksborg Slot) is located in the middle of the town of Hillerød, and is built on three islands in the castle lake. The oldest parts of the castle were started in 1560 by King Frederik II, for whom the castle was named, but most of what you see was put together between 1600-1620 and rebuilt between 1860 and 1884 after a fire burnt it. The National History Museum has been housed in the castle since 1878. Hillerød is 25 kilometres north of Copenhagen, a 45 minute train ride.
