Ocriculum Pictures - Italy Photo Gallery
The Roman site of Ocriculum is slowly crumbling away in the Umbrian countryside. Its compelling feature is that it's just that, a crumbling ruin where one can picnic in the fading glory of Roman history. When I visited years ago it was free--I can't say it still is, but there's not all that much to charge for either. You simply wander, alone with your thoughts, through the site. This picture shows part of a large "substructure" that Bill Thayer comments upon, "Behind the baths, a "grande sostruzione" — the archaeologists being very prudent but hoping it to be a temple base like at Terracina."
