The food and Wines of Panicale
You've heard of Lamborghini. They make fast cars you probably can't afford. But you can drink their wine or hang out on their golf course for little more than a song.

Wine picture

If you stand at the northern edge of Panicale's medieval walls, looking at the countryside around Lake Trasimeno, you might spot an area of intense green. The Lamborghini family has an agriturismo there, featuring pricy apartments, a golf course, and winery. Here two wines, the hightly touted "Campoleone" and the typical unbrian "Trescone" are produced.

The wine region around Panicale is called "Colli del Trasimeno." The main grapes used in the local red wines are: Sangiovese, Ciliegiolo, Gamay, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Grechetto is the big white in the region.

Restaurants and Cuisine

While Panicale is a very small town that has a fairly high proportion of tourists during the summer, local restaurants don't seem to cater only to them. You can still get local food here, including game.

Try Bici with Ragu (meat sauce), wild boar, crostone (big crostino, a toasted slab of bread) with Pheasant sauce, and anything with truffles.

Recommended Restaurants in Panicale

Lillo Tatini: P. Umberto Primo 13 - 06064 - Panicale (PG) - Tel: (+39) 075 837771

Across the piazza from Gallo's Bar, you'll see the tables set up. By all means go, the restaurant features local foods and decent wine. Don't miss any food they grate truffles over--on our trip it was a simple plate of roasted potatoes and the truffle addition transformed them into real gourmet chow.

Panicale: Da Masolino, Via del Filatoio, 4 (down the block from Gallo's Caffe), tel:075 837151, closed on Tuesday.

Small family run restaurant with pretty decent food. The Cesarinis (owners of several rental properties you'll meet on page three) recommend mamma Bruna's home-made pasta followed by an excellent fried guinea fowl and I concur.
