Azores Lodging - Hotels and Rural Accommodations in the Azores Islands
The Azores islands offer a number of lodging options. Many resort hotels are found on the coast, but for my money, I'd choose rural accommodation on farms and old manor houses in the Azores, since much of the attraction of the Azores islands is in the beauty of the rural landscape.

The host, Nick Heathcote, is passionate about his corner of the Azores; I chatted with him one day while he was setting up a taxi tour of San Miguel island for one of his guests. The rooms are airy and modern, "the best example of modernist architecture I've seen," an architect told me.

This restored mannor house has a pool and a great view of the ocean from the north coast of San Miguel island. You'll have breakfast in a traditional Azorean kitchen or on a terrace overlooking the Atlantic. The owners can arrange an airport transfer or rental car. The art is local and intersting. Highly recommended.

Construction using local materials, including the local volcanic basalt. Offers rooms and apartments. Reasonable rates for a four star hotel with restaurant, especially in the off season.

Large resort hotel with all rooms having balconies facing the Atlantic. There is a scuba diving center in the Hotel. The summer average air temperature here is 74 degrees F and the water averages 68 degrees F--good enough to make you want to dive in, eh?
