The Furnas valley of San Mighel island is where the volcanic nature of the Azores islands is most readily apparent. Natives of this beautiful valley have exploited the caldeiras (hot springs) for centuries, cooking a kind of stew called "cozido" using the natual steam venting along the shores of Furnas lake. Go into the town of Furnas and you'll see the caldeiras venting everywhere, and the mineral waters flowing from spigots scattered across the volcanic landscape, each with a different taste, offer the opportunity to sample the earth's gushing output of waters.
Along the way in our virtual tour of Furnas, we'll sample not only the cozido, but corn and chestnuts boiled in the steaming pools as well, and taste the slightly sweet Portuguese bread called Bolos Lêvedos.
