Carrara Marble Quarry Museum - Vasca

Carrara Quarry Picture, Fantiscritti: Vasca

Just past the parking lot is a small, free museum preserving some of the tools of the past that quarry workers depended upon. There are also some finds from older periods, like this vasca from around 500. On the left you can see some of the vats that were used to cure lardo (and are still used today in Colonnata).

This museum was formed from objects discarded in the 20th century when new technologies replaced them. It's interesting to note that many of the tools found in the museum hadn't changed significantly since the Romans mined marble here. It wasn't until the mid 1900s that power technology began to make mining marble much faster and easier.
