The lively Etruscan painted tombs of Tarquinia have incited travel writers to speculate on the lost culture for decades, including D. H. Lawrence in his famous Sketches of Etruscan Places and Other Italian Essays (Check Prices).
Tarquinia is an easily visited village in Italy's northern Lazio region. The tombs are on the ouskirts of town. There is also an archaeological museum a short walk away in the town of Tarquinia.
These pictures were taken through the glass windows that tourists look through to see the tombs. While some show a color shift toward yellow, I've not attempted to correct for it extensively. Pictures were taken with a Canon EOS 20D at ASA 1600, hand held.
