Before You Go on Your European Vacation - 2 Months Before You Travel

By , About.com Guide

Here are the things you'll need to think about around 6 weeks to two months before you go. The timeframe isn't that certain for these things, but you have to get them done some time. Well check on hotel reservations, then we'll start looking into transportation options.

Hotel Reservations

Sometimes you can wait until the last minute to make your hotel reservations. I do. Then again, I'm not too particular where I stay, as long as it's quiet and has a decent bed. Think about that first night, and where you'd like to stay. You don't want to be searching for a place in your jet lagged state.

Car or Train?

Ok, you've probably chosen the means of getting around already, but now's the time to get serious about renting (or leasing) a car, or to start looking into rail passes--and possibly budget flights as well.

If you're traveling to the big cities on the Grand Tour, I'd choose a train. If I did, I'd choose hotels near the station I'm planning to arrive at. I really don't like schlepping my bags all around after I've arrived at a city.

If you're planning mostly country visits, you'll need a car.

Europe by Car

Have you chosen the car as your main transportation while on vacation in Europe? Great. Here are some considerations when booking:
  • Save money and rent a diesel (Plenty of Diesel fuel is available, and it's cheaper and the cars get great milage)
  • Need a car for over 17 days? Consider leasing a brand new car; it can save money in the long run.
  • Get an International Driver's License at your auto club. It's really just a translation of your license, but you can get fined if you don't carry one.

Taking the Train

If you've chosen to ride the rails in Europe, you'll need to see if a Eurail pass will make things cheaper and easier. Even if it doesn't save you much money, passes can sometimes eliminate some of the language barriers and long ticketing lines for you. Where train tickets are cheap, as in Italy, I just buy point-to-point tickets when I need them. Your choice. Read the info below if you're unsure of how to work the train system in Europe.
