2007 marks the 50th anniversary of Frommer's Europe on $5 a Day, the legendary civilian version of the travel guide for American soldiers written by Arthur Frommer I've been traveling to Europe 30 of those years, so I thought you might like to know how travel has changed, or evolved, since that time.

Europe on $5 a Day was legendary 30 years ago, but by then I believe we were traveling under the $15 a day banner. (The popular guides stopped publication this year, after the titles topped out at Europe from $95 a Day). Thirty years ago I budgeted $25 per person a day, and lived fairly well, staying mostly in hotels with baths down the hall (very common in Europe at the time) and eating the free breakfast (meager in the south, a luxurious spread in the north), a light lunch (sometimes skipping it altogether), and having a very good dinner.

The picture below shows one interesting development in Europe over the past thirty years. Europe used to show its age by offering up monuments black with grit. Today there are chemical cleaners you apply, wipe off and voilà! You can actually see the stone!
