Train Travel - Then and Now

Unlike airline travel, train travel has gotten faster for the most part. Under pressure from discount airlines, trains have needed to exploit their advantage of transporting people from city center to city center by offering super speed trains between major hubs.

Luxury on trains has also increased. In the picture you see the first-class interior of the French Corail Téoz train. That's real leather you're looking at in the seats, which have an electrical outlet to charge your phone or computer. There are places to hang bicycles, and a padded playroom for kids.

30 years ago we used the only rail pass you could buy, the Eurail pass, which was a real bargain for unlimited rail travel for a period you could choose. The only luxury trains were the Trans-European Express trains, the TEEs, and they required a supplement, just as the luxury trains like the Corail Téoz do today. The standard passes were all first class.
