The The northern Cotes du Rhone is a region of fine wines south of Lyon, lesser known than the southern Cotes du Rhone around Orange and Avignon. Still, even if you explore the region by train, you'll see the legendary, steeply terraced vineyards of the Cote-Rotie and Hermitage spilling down the hills into the valley the train runs along. The journey from Lyon to Valence takes a mere one hour and ten minutes on a standard train. You can stop at Tain l'Hermitage to explore, or keep to the two major cities, Vienne and Valence. If you don't stop for too much wine, you can actually do this tour in a day, visiting both towns and seeing the vineyards (but not stopping).
