Marktl am Inn - Birthplace of Pope Benedict XVI

Marktl am Inn was a small town of 2700 nestled sleepily along the river Inn before media throngs covering the new pope swelled the population. Marktl is along the B12 roadway between Munich and Passau at the intersection with B20.

The Pope's Marktl am Inn

Pope Benedict XVI was born in Marktl on April 16th, 1927 and baptized the same day. The baptismal font is located in the town's small museum.

Marktl has a web site in German.

A good source of current information on Marktl am Inn is found on Travel-Write's Marktl am Inn page.

Although there are some places to stay in Marktl, pilgrims may find it full and wish to use the more abundant facilities at Altotting, the next stop on our Pope's Bavaria tour.
