Altotting - a Top Spot Along Germany's Pilgrimage Route

Although Pope Benedict XVI didn't have anything directly to do with the goings-on in Altotting, the town hosts one of Germany's most celebrated shrines, the Chapel of Mercy. Altotting is Germany's Lourdes, with the Chapel's 13th century statue of the Blessed Virgin credited with numerous miracles. Altotting has been a place of pilgrimage in Germany for over 500 years.

Altotting is 60 miles east of Munich along the Muhldorf-Burghausen railway. Altotting is located on the Morren river, not far from its confluence with the river Inn.

What to See and Do in Altotting

You must see the shrine and its 750 year-old Black Madonna, of course. There's also some actual hearts of Bavaria's elites in silver caskets going back 500 years in the shrine. You'll not want to miss that.

Lots more to see and do in Altotting, for more check the Tourism Office below. Altotting is said to have reasonable priced lodging and restaurants, although the tours seem a bit steep.
