Ten villages at about 1000 meters of elevation make up the Gstaad holiday region the Bernese Oberland. Very popular for winter sports and spa activities, the region also makes a fine base for alpine hiking and biking in summer. 2. Winter Activities in the Gstaad Saanenland Area
Winter activities include the usual skiing and snowboarding. You can buy tickets online for the major ski areas.
The Saanenland ski and hiking arena has over 60 transport facilities. The Montreux-Oberland-Railways (MOB) and buses connect Gstaad with other base stations in Saanenmöser, Schönried, Zweisimmen, Gsteig, Reusch, Lauenen Rougemont and Château-d'Oex in the French-speaking neighbouring region of Pays d'Enhaut.
Skiers and snowboarders can look forward to ver 250 km of pistes at altitudes of up to 3000 meters above sea level. Several snowparks and numerous toboggan runs as well as 80 km of classic and cross-country ski trails are at the disposal of visitors.
3. Snow Golf
From full moon to full moon every February it’s possible to play 9 holes of golf on the snow at Wispile near Gstaad. Next to the snow-tube installation, there's also a small driving-range.
Snow golf? Wikipedia claims: "Rudyard Kipling, living in Vermont in the 1890's, invented the game of snow golf."
The first ever Snowgolf World Championship for amateurs was carried out in January 2007 in Abtenau, Austria.
4. Summer in Gstaad
One of the most prominent of summer activities around Gstaad is alpine hiking on the more than 300km of trails. There's also mountain biking, paragliding and golf (the summer, greener variety). The River Saane offers kayak and canoe adventures. You might even be able to get in some summer cross-country skiing in the "Glacier 3000" ski region.
