You'd hardly think such a village could wow you with attractions besides the idylic qualities of its landscape. Many people make the mistake of staying overnight in Hallstatt, or "doing" Hallstatt as a day trip from Salzburg. Don't make that mistake. Stay two or three nights. You'll see the ancient salt mines that have been around since the early iron age. You'll see ice caves (and perhaps hear a concert inside one in summer). You'll see the ancient burial ground and a chapel of written-upon skulls. And yes, there's the idylic countryside and the well-marked hiking trails.
In Hallstatt, even the train ride requires you take a boat trip to reach the village.
