Guide Review - Milan Restaurant Review - Trattoria Toscana di Giovanni
At lunch the place is filled with businessmen (yes, almost exclusively men) dressed in suits and ties. The ties are loosened the moment the big fiasco of vino arrives. That's another thing I like. You sit down and if you ask for wine, a liter and a half of it arrives at your table. If you don't know what's going on, you think you're on your way to getting roaring drunk if you finish it--but the age-old tradition is that you will be charged for just what you drink.
On my latest visit, I went overboard on the food, ordering a perfect seafood pasta with mussels and clams (the best, freshest mussels I've tasted), then moving on to a big plate of Cinghiale alla Maremma, Wild Boar Stew with Polenta. It was piping hot and a huge serving. I had no need for dinner that night.
Oh, and I just had to have the broccoli rabe, or Cima di Rape, with hot pepper and oil as my "contorno."
All in all a great meal. If you find yourself in Milano near the train station, try Trattoria Toscana de Giovanni, on Via Gustavo Fara 9, to the right as you exit the train station. Tel. 02 66987100.
