Trattoria Toscana di Giovanni in Milan, Italy

James Martin

The Bottom Line

I fell in love with Trattoria Toscana de Giovanni the first time I went, maybe 10 years ago. It was a lively gathering place for Milanese food lovers, with old fashioned waiters who catered to every diner's whim in the cacophonous atmosphere without a whimper. I recently returned, and the food was as tasty as ever.

Pros

  • Great Tuscan cuisine at reasonable prices
  • Convenient location near Milano Centrale rail station
  • Extensive menu including a whole page of daily specials

Cons

  • Trattoria Toscana de Giovanni doesn't serve the local cuisine

Description

  • Trattoria Toscana de Giovanni is a great Tuscan restaurant near the Milan train station.
  • An extensive menu and equally extensive wine list is featured at Trattoria Toscana de Giovanni.
  • Come as you are. It's the food that's important.

Guide Review - Milan Restaurant Review - Trattoria Toscana di Giovanni

I remember places where the diners are animated, the place is rocking, and the food is good and inexpensive. The Trattoria Toscana di Giovanni near Milano Centrale rail station is just such a place, and it's been that way for years.

At lunch the place is filled with businessmen (yes, almost exclusively men) dressed in suits and ties. The ties are loosened the moment the big fiasco of vino arrives. That's another thing I like. You sit down and if you ask for wine, a liter and a half of it arrives at your table. If you don't know what's going on, you think you're on your way to getting roaring drunk if you finish it--but the age-old tradition is that you will be charged for just what you drink.

On my latest visit, I went overboard on the food, ordering a perfect seafood pasta with mussels and clams (the best, freshest mussels I've tasted), then moving on to a big plate of Cinghiale alla Maremma, Wild Boar Stew with Polenta. It was piping hot and a huge serving. I had no need for dinner that night.

Oh, and I just had to have the broccoli rabe, or Cima di Rape, with hot pepper and oil as my "contorno."

All in all a great meal. If you find yourself in Milano near the train station, try Trattoria Toscana de Giovanni, on Via Gustavo Fara 9, to the right as you exit the train station. Tel. 02 66987100.

My first time in Milan was August 2006. My friends and I got off the train station, and checked into our hotel at the Sheraton a few blocks from the main station. It was 8pm and we were tired and hungry. It was low season at the time, many places in our area were closed/on vacation. We found this restaurant from our receptionist's recommendation. The restaurant is very modern and classy without being snobby. The food was amazing! It might seem expensive, but the food is so good, we didn't care how much we were paying. We even went back for our friend's birthday. One thing that could have been better, we mentioned it was our friend's birthday and asked for a little something like a candle in a piece of cake, they came out 3 times all to other tables but forgot about ours. I guess perhaps they misunderstood us since we didn't speak any italian. All in all, it was great food and whenever I hear anyone is going to Milan, I always recommend to go here. Although, I think if it wasn't low season you would probably need to make a reservation. Wow, the food was great! Enjoy ~
