You'll find out a lot of interesting things you didn't know about Grappa on the tour, including what the distillery needs to do to keep from upsetting the tax man, and what alchemy skills the stillman uses to capture the very essence of the grape being made into grappa.

All this in a building with a wonderful view of Piemonte vineyards.

Fine Grappa - Tasting Berta's Grappas

So what does this expensive Grappa produced by Berta taste like? Well, it isn't the cheap, clear liguid you've had rip through your esophagus like a wildfire at an Italian dive bar, that's for sure.

The grappa that stood out to me was the Grappa di Moscato d' Asti Bric del Gaian 1997. First there's that characteristic heat that warms you but isn't harsh at all, then there's a quick crescendo of rising flavor, finally exploding with the floral quality of the Muscato grape. It's like Muscato x 10. It was an eye opener for sure.

I tasted several grappas that night. All were superb. Each was worthy of being substituted for a fine Cognac.

And my head didn't explode. That's always a good sign.
