Italy Travel ResourcesLodging near Lago Maggiore and the airportSep 7 2006 Staying by the lake if you have the time before your flightThere are two cities convenient to Malpensa airport in the lake region that have likely lodging options. The first and farthest is in the village of Stresa. Here you'll find a plethora of hotels, from one star budget hotels to luxury villas. Stresa itself has quite a bit of shopping of the tourist type, including shops selling Deruta pottery. But it's first and foremost a tourist town, and I didn't like the feel of it much. The tourist office in Stresa is on the right of the main highway, near the ferry docks. They'll give you a list of hotels in town. A better and closer option is the town of Arona. A quiet and popular hotel option is the three-star Michelangelo, just on the left as you enter the town. A double will cost you 70 Euros, and all rooms are air conditioned. Breakfast adds another 5 Euros. Fenced private parking is free. There is a ristorante pizzeria on the premises, although a short walk into town gives you other eating options. It was a 20 minute drive from the Michelangelo to Terminal 1 at Malpensa on a Sunday morning with no traffic. You should allow much more time if you're traveling on a weekday. Ask at the hotel desk if you're unsure. Michelangelo Hotel and Restaurant Vialle F. Baracca 18 Arona Telephone: 0322 248686 Fax: 0322 46509 (add 001-39 if calling from the US) Information: info@michelangelo-restaurant.it The Atlantic Hotel **** Four Star Hotel in Arona. The Atlantic Hotel overlooks the lakeside promenade in Arona. The rooms are rather tired and a bit worn around the edges, but the hotel is quiet and most rooms have balconies, the front rooms facing the waterfront. A double room in July 2004 was 105 Euros. Internet access is available at an extra charge, using two computers in the bar. Atlantic Hotel Corso Repubblica 124 Arona Telephone: 0322 46521 Fax: 0322 48358 (add 001-39 if calling from the US) Eating in AronaI highly recommend Hostaria Al Vecchio Portico in the Piazza del Popolo in Arona. Phone them at 0322 240108 for a reservation, especially if you want an outside table on a weekend. Fabulous fresh seafood in a family run restaurant.Italy Travel Resources |
