There are thousands of medieval festivals in Italy. One of my favorites of the small festivals is the Disfida in Fivizzano in northern Tuscany. The Disfida is an archery festival in which the local contrade, or neighborhoods, compete. The final night of the Disfida features a parade of people in medieval costume, flag throwers called bandieri, and the archery contest.
I've tried to isolate the people in medieval costume and their interactions from the modern world distractions so that you might get a feel for the medieval period of history that attracts many of us to Italy as a travel destination.
