Virtually unknown to American tourists, La Rochelle is a very interesting and laid back town with an interesting old port area framed by three 14th century towers. La Rochelle features a medieval city, a port lined with cafes, ice cream shops, and seafood restaurants, plus some interesting museums, all dealing with La Rochelle's history as a maritime port on the Bay of Biscay.
La Rochelle also makes a good base for visiting the vineyards of Bordeaux and Cognac.
