One of the more interesting places to visit in Lisbon is the Monastery of Jeronimos found in the Belem District, near the Tower of Belem. Construction of the Monastery began in 1501, and was to be completed just about 100 years later. When you see the architectural details of our Monastery of Jeronimos pictures, you might wonder how they did it that quickly.
You can visit the church for free, but they'll charge you to visit the cloisters. The church houses the tombs of Vasco de Gama and Luis Vas de Camoes, the poet, and features the striking 16th century altarpiece by Lourenco de Salzedo.
The Monastery of Jeronimos was declared a National Monument in 1907, and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984.
