Lucerne. I love towns situated on a lake. Lucerne is the perfect place for walkers. The waterfront is appropriately lined with restaurants and cafes, a stroll up to see the medieval walls presents a decent view (it's even better if you get higher, as you can from Mount Rigi.)
Look for long established and informal restaurants and hotels to take the sting out of Switzerland's strong currency; we liked the traditional dishes served at the Schlossel hotel in Lucerne.
One of the great things about Lucerne's famous covered bridges is the art that's on display in triangular shapes made to tuck into the rafters. You'll see pictures of those in our gallery, too.
