Matera is one of my favorite cities in Europe. It has a weird and wonderful mid-summer festival called Festa della Madonna Bruna, rock-cut cave houses called sassi, and some very interesting places to stay.
Matera's passeggiata is one of the highlights of the early evening, especially in the fall when darkness falls early and the multicolored fountain spews great plumes of water at the center of the strolling throng in front of the historic city hall.
