Monteriggioni is a walled city on the Via Francigena pilgrimage route 14 kilometers northwest of Siena along the Via Cassia. What is remarkable about the village is the complete wall with 14 towers visible from the highway.
Built as a border outpost by Siena against the Florentine state it completed its task, surviving several battles between 1229 and 1235. The village wasn't nearly as successful at colonization; even today much of the space inside the walls is given over to gardens and weeds, rather than the jumble of medieval construction one might expect.
In the 60's 5 sharecroppers and their animals lived and worked in Monteriggioni. Today the village exists entirely for tourists and pilgrims. You won't be bothered by butcher shops and pharmacies, only restaurants, wine shops, hotels, and the inevitable tourist trinket shops are to be found here.
