Many forces were at work for little Orvieto to get such a fine Duomo. In short, Orvieto was one of the few places outside Rome in the Papal Territory of central Italy with a Papal Palace, and several Popes spent time here before moving to Avignon, bestowing Orvieto with a wealthier than normal set of religious monuments.
The Gothic facade of the Duomo has several mosaic art pieces, as well as some general decorative mosaic works you'll see in detail photos here. The facade is particular stunning after a rain, particularly if the sun shines while the facade is still wet.
The Duomo sits upon a volcanic tuff butte which is riddled with caves and passageways. Someday all that you see in these pictures could be swallowed up into the void. Visit soon. Oh, and if you're really adventurous, take the Orvieto underground tour, which starts near the Duomo.
