What's it like in the vineyards of the Langhe region of Piemonte at harvest time? Hopefully the pictures in this picture gallery will give you some idea of the colors, the frequent, low-lying fog from which the nebbiolo grape takes its name, and the beauty of the region.
The Langhe is perfect for vineyard walks. You don't have to spend money on a tour, just reserve a room (we recommend Albergo Le Torri in Castiglione Falletto for the views, the fine restaurant and the helpful staff), and take off on one of the many less-traveled roads or on the Barolo trail, a well-marked walking path between some of the great wine producing towns of the Langhe.
Be aware that wineries are an agricultural business and are busy this time of year. Few offer tasting during the harvest. You generally taste or buy wines in a cantina comunale; there is a cantina in Castiglione Falletto.
