Why was the Avignon Bridge important? It was the only crossing point on the Rhone river, which in the 12th century formed the natural boundary between the Kingdom of France and the Holy Roman Germanic Empire. It was destroyed by Louis VIII during the Albigensian crusade and rebuilt in the late 13th century before it was abandoned after floods ravaged it in the 17th century. Today all that remains is the 4 arches you see in the picture out of the original 22.
