A virtual tour of Lourmarin, a village in the Luberon

By , About.com Guide

On a recent trip to the Luberon, I chose to stay in Lourmarin. Other folks have too, including author Peter Mayle. It's a very livable village, with a vibrant cafe life and meandering roads through a mainly pedestrian town center. There's no doubt it's a tourist town; there are lots of restaurants for its size.

Lourmarin isn't a hill town. It lies on the flat along the Aiguebrun river; only its castle is raised slightly. Lourmarin was an important stage stop on the Marseilles to Apt route.

Here our virtual tour takes us through the town, stopping to admire some older buildings and the vibrant blue of many doors and shutters. There are some market pictures because Lourmarin has a lively Friday market. Finally there's the castle or Chateau, which houses a wine tasting room and can be visited. Perhaps the most notable residents of Lourmarin was author Albert Camus, who is buried in the cemetary there.
