The Bottom Line

Slang, cool lingo, indecent gestures: For some reason all these things cement your place in a culture. The tourist with a rudimentary level of foreign language skills may never quite fit in, because he or she just can't parse enough of the local variations of proper speech to be cool. "Hide this Spanish Book" is an attempt to bridge that gap. Your success in speaking the phrases in this book may depend on how much courage you can muster using sentences you might not understand the response to.
Pros
  • Fill in the blanks--learn the stuff your high school Spanish Teacher couldn't tell you.
  • Learn to speak the appropriate words of love when you meet someone special

Guide Review - Hide This Spanish Book - Slang Phrase Book

When Berlitz told me the reasons for publishing "Hide this Spanish Book," I was sceptical. I've tried using slang phrases, and I've even tried to make a pun in a language I stuggled with. The response is usually a blank stare, even when you get it right. That's because folks don't expect you to interact with them on that level when they know your language skills are limited. It throws them.

But then that's not the whole story. Understanding the slang terms used in your presence makes you a part of the party, even if you're not allowed to use them back--and knowing slang can give you some additional insight into to the culture you're visiting. Flipping through the book is a joy; care has been taken to warn you which phrases are really crude and which are incredibly vulgar. Annotations provide cultural clues and contexts, telling you how A Spaniard might use or view the phrase. Warnings abound in the sex section--especially since the slang sexual terms have abundant regional variations. (remember that Spanish is spoken not only in Spain, but throughout Central and South America as well. Berlitz has done a great job of noting the differences.)

Bottom line? For anyone who has developed the passion to get inside a culture they've visited and who has gone as far as one can saying "Hola" and "buenas tardes." I recommend "Hide this Spanish Book." It's a good tool for the inquisitive traveler to browse, and the gregarious traveler to carry in a pocket or bag on the way to the bar.
