Speyer is an interesting town to visit along the Rhine river in the Rhineland-Palatinate state of Germany. Speyer hosts the enormous Imperial Cathedral founded by Emperor Conrad II in 1030 and consecrated in 1060. Many important heads of state have visited the Cathedral, including George Bush Sr. The crypt of the Cathedral contains the tombs of eight German emperors and kings, as well as several bishops.
You'll also see the best preserved Jewish ritual bath in Europe. It was established before 1128.
Speyer has an interesting medieval center to discover. Its main city gate is one of the tallest in Germany. The lower sections were constructed between 1230 and 1250.
