Here is one of the prettiest scenes I've found among many in the Lunigiana, just outside the village of Soliera. The little parish church (pieve) beckons me to photograph it each time I pass on a clear evening. What's interesting about this little piece of heaven is that behind the pieve, or country parish church you see in the foreground, there is a hidden bed and breakfast agriturismo which produces wine and olive oil you can purchase even if you're not staying there. It's called Il Bardellino, check the site for reservation information.
The castle you see in front of the mountains is the 12th century Castello dell'Aquila (Gragnola), believed to have been started in the late 9th century and eventually finding its way into Malspina hands. It is now privately owned.
