The Bottom Line

Laura Porter, the about.com guide to London Travel, recently visited Blair Drummond Safari Park near Stirling, Scotland (about an hour west of Edinburgh), and highly recommends the experience.

Pros

  • Can drive through safari as many times as you wish
  • Can get close to the animals
  • Viewing platforms so you can walk around too
  • Buses can drive you through if you come by public transport
  • Under 3s go free

Cons

  • Extra charge for funfair rides
  • Can't enter Sea Lion show late

Description

  • Petting Farm: Great for children of all ages. Plenty of hand washing facilities.
  • Eating: Best take a picnic as there are plenty of picnic tables. Alternatively there's a BBQ area or the indoor restaurant.
  • No Pets: But there are free kennels available so don't avoid a visit if your dogs are on holidays with you.
  • Safari Park: Drive through wild animal enclosures and see lions, tigers, bison, antelope, giraffes, camels, etc.
  • Adventure Playground: Giant astraglide (big, big slide!), pirate ship adventure climbing area.
  • Location: Just outside Stirling, Scotland. I hour drive from Edinburgh or Glasgow.
  • Visit Duration: 3-4 hours minimum. Longer if you plan to see a Sea Lion Show and Bird of Prey Display.

Guide Review - Blair Drummond Safari and Adventure Park Review

I visited Blair Drummond Safari Park while on a family holiday touring around Scotland in August 2008.

Our 2 year old was thrilled to see the animals so close and we were lucky enough to watch feeding time in the safari park.

We took a boat trip around 'Chimp Island' and were fascinated to hear the chimpanzees stay on the island as they don't like water! The sun came out and we had a picnic lunch near the funfair rides. There are plenty of picnic tables, plus a restaurant, kiosk and ever a BBQ area. You needed to buy tokens to go on the funfair rides so we skipped that and tried the giant astraglide!

We stayed for 3.5 hours but we still missed the Sea Lion Shows and the Birds of Prey Displays. (Be warned, you can't enter after the show starts as the doors are locked so check the times when you arrive.)

We didn't ever try the 5-seater pedal boats or the adventure play and climbing area (suitable for all ages). We're already planning to return next year. Highly recommended!
