Venice
- Campo
Anywhere else it's called
a piazza. Not in Venice. In Venice only the Piazza San Marco is grand
enough to be called a piazza. The concept of a campo is an indicator
of Venice's humble beginings; it has a pozzo (a well, filled by the
rainwater from the roofs of the surrounding houses) and usually a
church. This one, with its solitary tree and benches filled with women,
was my favorite. |
